The University of Detroit Mercy continues its commitment to rebuilding the men’s basketball program with local talent, as 2026 power forward Chance Houser of Summit Academy (MI) and The Family AAU program has announced his commitment to the Titans.
At 6-foot-5 with a strong, slender frame and growing skill set, Houser has established himself as one of the most promising wing prospects in Michigan’s 2026 class. His development with The Family has turned heads all summer, showcasing his ability to stretch the floor, finish through contact, and protect the rim on the defensive end.
Houser’s decision to commit early to Detroit Mercy signals growing momentum behind Coach Mark Montgomery’s vision — one built on homegrown players who embrace the city’s blue-collar toughness and pride. Montgomery, a former Michigan State assistant, has made it a priority to recruit from within the state and connect with the grassroots community.
“Chance brings size, motor, and an edge we’re looking for,” said a source close to the program. “He wants to be part of something bigger — helping put Detroit back on the map.”
By committing to UDM, Houser joins a movement of local standouts staying home to represent the Motor City and elevate a program with deep roots in the community. With his blend of size, potential, and work ethic, Chance Houser is the type of cornerstone piece that can help Detroit Mercy climb back into contention in the Horizon League.
Elite Hoops Spotlight will continue to follow Chance Houser and Detroit Mercy’s in-state recruiting efforts as the 2026 class unfolds.
