Every possession mattered Tuesday night as Rockford High School and Grand Rapids Northview High School battled in a gritty defensive showdown in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 state quarterfinal. When the final horn sounded, Rockford escaped with a narrow 48–47 victory, punching its ticket to the Division 1 Final Four at the Breslin Center for the first time since 2012.
In a game defined by defensive intensity and composure under pressure, the Rams leaned on balanced scoring and timely stops to hold off a late Northview rally.
Rockford was led by Jake Bascom, who delivered a strong performance with 17 points, consistently finding ways to score in half-court sets and helping stabilize the Rams offensively. His presence on the perimeter created spacing and momentum whenever the game tightened.
His brother Josh Bascom added 11 points, providing another scoring option and helping Rockford maintain offensive rhythm throughout the night. The Rams also received key contributions from Dylan Gross and Jace Opoku-Agyeman, who each scored eight points, giving Rockford the balanced attack it needed in a low-scoring postseason battle.
Northview countered with its own star power. Cam Ryans, a Western Michigan commit, once again showed why he has been one of the most dynamic players in Michigan this season. Ryans finished with 17 points, attacking the basket and keeping the Wildcats within striking distance throughout the game.
Anthony Willis chipped in eight points for Northview, helping the Wildcats stay competitive in a tightly contested matchup that never allowed either team to fully separate.
The final moments were tense.
With Rockford holding a one-point lead in the closing seconds, Northview had an opportunity to tie the game at the free-throw line. Ryans stepped to the stripe with the game hanging in the balance, but the potential game-tying free throw would not fall. Rockford secured the rebound and held on for the dramatic 48–47 win.
The victory sends the Rams to the state semifinals, where they will face Auburn Hills Avondale High School (26-1) at noon at the Breslin Center.
For Rockford, the win represents more than just advancement in the tournament. It marks the program’s first trip to the state semifinals since 2012, a milestone moment for a group that has steadily built momentum throughout the season.
Now the stage shifts to East Lansing, where the Rams will look to continue their run against one of the top teams in the state.
