Basketball is more than just a game; it’s a journey that reveals the character, determination, and resilience of those who play it. Few players embody this journey as vividly as Leroy Blyden Jr. Watching him evolve as a player has been a privilege, and here’s why I’ll always love his game.

Humble Beginnings as an Undersized Two-Guard

Leroy entered high school as an undersized shooting guard. Unlike some players who walk in with towering height or dominant physicality, Leroy had to rely on grit, determination, and an insatiable work ethic. Starting as a freshman on the junior varsity team, he didn’t let this placement define him. Instead, he used it as fuel to refine his skills and prove himself.

Tireless Development into a Point Guard

Leroy’s transformation into a point guard is a testament to his dedication. Recognizing the need to diversify his game, he spent countless hours honing his ball-handling, court vision, and decision-making. He didn’t just want to play the game; he wanted to master it. This relentless pursuit of growth led him to earn a starting position on varsity as a sophomore—a significant achievement highlighting his progress and potential.

Competing Against the Best on the EYBL Circuit

Leroy didn’t just stop at high school success. He sought challenges on the highest level of amateur basketball, the Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL). On this national stage, Leroy faced some of the best young players in the country and proved he could hold his own. The EYBL isn’t for the faint of heart, and Leroy’s ability to thrive in such a competitive environment speaks volumes about his talent and mental toughness.

Leadership and Excellence as a Junior

By his junior year, Leroy wasn’t just a player—he was a leader. As his team's starting point guard and captain, he embraced the responsibility of guiding his teammates on and off the court. His leadership translated into tangible success, as he led his team in scoring and earned the prestigious title of All-Catholic. These accolades didn’t come from raw talent alone; they resulted from years of hard work, sacrifice, and determination.

Leading the #1 Team in Michigan as a Senior

In his senior year, Leroy has elevated his game even further. As the starting point guard and captain of the University of Detroit Jesuit Cubs—the top-ranked team in Michigan—he has solidified his role as the heart and soul of the squad. Leading his team in scoring, assists, and rebounds, Leroy has shown that he is an elite player and an all-around contributor who will do whatever it takes to help his team succeed. He recently surpassed the 1000 career points mark, a significant accomplishment.

Signed with the University of Toledo Rockets

The pinnacle of Leroy’s journey thus far came with his decision to attend the University of Toledo Rockets. This milestone is a well-deserved reward for years of hard work and sacrifice. It’s a testament to his talent, determination, and ability to rise above challenges. At Toledo, Leroy will continue to compete at the highest level, showcasing his skills on the Division I stage and proving that his journey is far from over.

Why Leroy Blyden Jr.’s Game Inspires

Leroy Blyden Jr. is more than just a talented basketball player. He is the epitome of perseverance, growth, and leadership. His journey from an undersized JV freshman to the leader of the best team in Michigan is a story of what’s possible when talent meets hard work and dedication.

Watching Leroy play is inspiring because of his skills and the relentless drive that defines his game. He has faced challenges head-on, pushed himself to new heights, and earned his place among the best. I will always love Leroy Blyden Jr.’s basketball game—it represents everything great about the sport and the human spirit.
