From Southern California to JUCO Star: KJ Perry’s Road to BYU and Beyond

GLENDORA, Calif. — On the hardwood court of Citrus College, a sleek guard in No. something sprints in transition, crosses up his defender, and rises with long limbs for a one-handed finish. That guard is KJ Perry — a 6’2-3 combo guard whose freshman season at the JUCO level has quickly become a launching pad for high-level Division I opportunity.

Hailing from the Los Angeles area and active on the SoCal prep circuit, Perry arrived at Citrus with a plan: refine his game, show his scoring and playmaking chops, and open a path to a four-year school. In his first season, he averaged roughly 17.5 points and nearly 3 assists per game, converting at nearly 50 percent from the field and connecting from beyond the arc with more consistency than expected for a freshman. His numbers reflect more than raw talent — they speak to a guard who competes, finishes, and understands how to get baskets.

What sets Perry apart is the blend of explosion and polish. He pushes the pace when he senses it, turns into the lane with conviction, and when the defense collapses, he’s ready to hit the open shooter or reset the offense. Yet he can flip roles and become a scoring off-guard when asked — a duality that makes him attractive to coaches seeking versatility.

Recruiting interest in Perry lit up quickly. By mid-2025, major programs were vying for his commitment: SMU, Oregon, USC, TCU, NC State among a list of suitors. He selected BYU this fall, citing coach vision, culture, and fit. The commitment reflects how rare it is for a freshman JUCO guard to carry such momentum.

Still, the transition to a four-year program raises the bar. Perry will need to continue adding strength, increase his three-point attempt rate and consistency, and guard at a higher level of speed and physicality. But on tape and by the numbers, he looks the part of a next-tier guard — someone who can step into a major conference rotation and contribute sooner rather than later.

What bears watching this next year: Can Perry lift his three-point volume to match his two-point explosion? Can he sustain high scoring while becoming a more complete playmaker? And can he leverage his JUCO success into an immediate impact at BYU?

Because for a guard with his lean frame, rapid ascent, and clear ambition, the story is just beginning. And from Citrus to Provo, KJ Perry appears ready to write the next chapter.
