From Hastings, New Zealand to the Arizona Desert: Kahu Treacher’s JUCO Journey Begins at Eastern Arizona

In the small desert town of Thatcher, Arizona, a lanky forward from Hastings, New Zealand, is quietly writing the first chapter of his American basketball story. At just 18 years old, Kahu Treacher stands at 6′9″ and brings both size and skill to the roster of Eastern Arizona College. The move to the JUCO ranks was a calculated step — a chance to sharpen his game, adjust to the physical play of U.S. college basketball, and position himself for the next rung.

Treacher arrived with a decorated youth résumé: he had played for New Zealand’s junior national teams, competed in international camps, and participated in elite prep competitions. These experiences allowed him to bypass typical acclimation curves, but JUCO still demanded physicality, intensity, and consistency. Last season, he appeared in 33 games, averaging roughly 14.7 minutes per game, notched about 7.1 points and 3.9 rebounds per outing, while shooting 44.4% from the field and 36.6% from three-point range. These numbers, while modest, hint at a forward who can score and space the floor — rare in his age/level combination.

What stands out in Treacher’s game is his versatility: the ability to step out and knock down jumpers, drive closeouts into the lane, rebound with effort, and defend multiple positions. In today’s college game where 3/4 hybrids are prized, his profile fits. Eastern Arizona’s coaching staff has already given him opportunities in spurts, trusting that his international poise and work ethic will translate.

Looking ahead, much of Treacher’s next season will come down to volume and consistency. Will he increase his minutes and rebounding numbers? Will he show that his 36.6 % three-point mark is not a fluke but a weapon? Can he add muscle and strength to finish through contact, defend more aggressively and dominate rebounding boards? If the answers are yes, then he will likely have programs at four-year colleges lining up.

Treacher’s journey embodies the globalization of basketball today. A youth in New Zealand, now at a two-year college in Arizona, with sights set on the next level. His story reminds us that paths are no longer linear: JUCO can be a springboard, international backgrounds are now common, and flexibility of role is a premium for modern forwards.

For coaches and scouts, Treacher is a name to monitor: an 18-year-old 6′9″ forward who shoots the three, rebounds, defends, and is already gaining experience. His next chapter could open soon — and if he stays on this trajectory, it could be at a Division I school or beyond.

Eastern Arizona fans, buckle up: the kid from Hastings is just getting started.
