Homecoming Heat: Why Ian Jackson fits Rick Pitino’s vision at St. John’s

Ian Jackson’s return home to New York has become one of the most talked-about storylines heading into the 2025-26 college basketball season. After transferring from North Carolina, the former five-star guard has quickly earned praise from St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino for the strides he’s made since arriving in Queens. Pitino recently noted that Jackson has gone from being “the 10th or 11th guy” on the team to “one of the top three,” highlighting the work he’s put in to refine his game and maturity on both ends of the floor.

Jackson’s focus this offseason has reportedly been on improving his decision-making and understanding of tempo — learning when to push, when to attack, and how to create more efficiently for others. While early projections suggested he might slide into a lead-guard role, Pitino has now confirmed that Oziyah Sellers will start at point guard, allowing Jackson to operate primarily as a scoring wing and secondary playmaker. That adjustment suits his natural rhythm as a downhill threat and transition finisher who can put pressure on defenses without having to initiate every possession.

At media day, Jackson was calm about the expectations that come with his high profile and the Red Storm’s new national spotlight. He made it clear that pressure “isn’t really an issue,” emphasizing how comfortable he feels being back home. His composure and confidence seem to fit the culture Pitino is building — a blend of toughness, accountability, and star power.

The Red Storm are entering the season with their highest preseason ranking in program history, sitting at No. 5 in the AP Top 25. That buzz has a lot to do with their deep, experienced roster, but Jackson’s presence — a local star with NBA potential — gives the team a real jolt of excitement. His combination of explosiveness, shot creation, and emotional steadiness could make him one of the Big East’s breakout players if he continues to balance scoring aggression with team play.

Jackson’s story has a hometown hero arc — a Bronx native coming back to lead a revitalized St. John’s team under a Hall of Fame coach. The upcoming season will reveal whether that narrative becomes a reality, but for now, all signs point to growth, maturity, and a player ready to meet the moment.
